OUR STORY · A LETTER FROM HASRET

I grew up in Vienna,
ten minutes from a palace
called Belvedere.

My grandmother lived on the top floor of an old building on Hofburg-Allee, and on Saturdays I would walk up four flights to her kitchen and help her roll out Linzer dough. She would say: "Patience is half the recipe."

Twenty years later, I brought her recipe book to Los Angeles. Nothing about the book has changed — only the address. Every Sunday morning, somewhere between Echo Park and Santa Monica, I unload a van of pastries onto a wooden farmers-market table and try to bake what she baked.
